Srini Raju served as the company's first CEO and MD when Cognizant was founded in 1994 in Chennai, India, as Dun & Bradstreet Satyam Software (DBSS), a joint venture between Dun & Bradstreet and Satyam Computer Services. The in-house technology section of Dun & Bradstreet, which was tasked with executing significant IT projects for the company's businesses, started out with 50 workers in Chennai. The business began looking for clients outside of Dun & Bradstreet in 1996.
In order to create the new Cognizant Corporation, which has its headquarters in Chennai, India, Dun & Bradstreet spun off a number of its companies in 1996, including Erisco, IMS International, Nielsen Media Research, Pilot Software, Strategic Technologies, and DBSS. In 1997, DBSS changed its name to Cognizant Technology Solutions after three months.
For $3.4 million, Dun & Bradstreet acquired Satyam's 24% ownership in DBSS in July 1997. After the company's headquarters were relocated to the US, Kumar Mahadeva was appointed CEO in March 1998. Functioning as a section of Cognizant Corporation, the organization concentrated on web development and initiatives linked to Y2K.
