The Power Grid Corporation of India Limited was established as a public limited company on October 23, 1989, under the Companies Act, 1956. Its authorized share capital was Rs. 5,000 crore, which was later increased to Rs. 10,000 crore in the Financial Year (FY) 2007–08. The Government of India owned 51.34% of the company as of December 31, 2020, making it the primary electric power transmission company in the nation.

Under its previous name, "National Power Transmission Corporation Limited," it was tasked with developing, constructing, acquiring, running, and maintaining the nation's high-voltage transmission networks.The company was granted a Certificate of Commencement of Business on November 8, 1990. On October 23, 1992, they changed their name to Power Grid Corporation of India Limited.
