Incorporated in 1975, NHPC Limited (formerly known as the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation) is a public sector hydropower enterprise in India, tasked with organizing, planning, and promoting the efficient and integrated development of hydroelectric power. It now includes more energy sources like wind, solar, geothermal, and tidal.

NHPC is currently ranked among the top ten enterprises in India in terms of investment base and is a Mini Ratna Category-I Enterprise of the Indian government. NHPC's first project was the Baira Suil Power station, located in Salooni Tehsil in the region of Chamba. 

On September 1, 2009, NHPC went public on both the National Stock Exchange and the Bombay Stock Exchange. Governments of India and State governments own 74.51% of the company as promoters, with the public owning the remaining 25.49%. There are 191,337 shareholders in total, and the share capital is ₹12,300,742,773.
