According to the provisions of the States Reorganisation Act, 1956, the current state of Karnataka was formed on November 1, 1956, by integrating the old Mysore State, portions of the former Bombay and Madras Presidencies, some areas of the former Hyderabad State, and the former State of Coorg. Because a large portion of the reorganized state was from the old Mysore State, it was initially known as Mysore State before being renamed Karnataka in 1973.
