The BIS is the National Standard Body of India, created by the BIS Act of 2016 to promote the orderly growth of the activities related to standardization, product certification, and marking, as well as any related or incidental problems. Through standardization, certification, and testing, BIS has been able to control the proliferation of varieties, promote exports and imports as alternatives, minimize health hazards to consumers, and provide safe, reliable, high-quality goods, among other traceability and tangibility benefits to the national economy.
The BIS is headquartered in New Delhi, with five Regional Offices (ROs) located in Delhi (Central), Chandigarh (Northern), Mumbai (Western), Chennai (Southern), and Kolkata (Eastern). The Branch Offices (BOs) under the Regional Offices are situated in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, BhopaSl, Coimbatore, Dehradun, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kochi, Lucknow, Nagpur, Parwanoo, Patna, Pune, Rajkot, Raipur, Durgapur, Jamshedpur, and Vishakhapatnam. The BOs provide certification services to the industry and function as an efficient conduit between the State Governments, the regional industries, technical institutions, consumer organizations, etc.
